Mangal Deep Vidya Mandir, which means “Lamp of Goodness School” is a school for special children that was founded in 1998 at Almora, a small hill town in the central Himalayan region of Uttarakhand, India. The school is a haven for local children with special needs like those who are mentally challenged, hearing impaired, autistic or spastic, as there are no facilities in the area for such children, who were typically left to fend for themselves earlier, in their usually poor households. Regular schools are not practical for such children and a need was therefore felt by some educationists to start a school specially for these children. Thus, Mangal Deep Vidya Mandir was set up in 1998.
