At Mangal Deep we believe each child is unique and needs to learn in his or her own way and pace. The special needs of the child are assessed at enrolment, by carefully examining the child’s overall development – physical, cognitive, scholastic and social – which has been typically delayed due to disability. Over the years our teaching methodology, content and delivery have been adapted to meet the different learning requirements and the child is placed in an appropriate educational setting designed to support his or her special needs.
Depending on their needs, emphasis is placed on developing motor coordination and social skills early, through games, yoga, dance, drama, puppetry and music. Reading comprehension, writing, speaking, drawing and numeracy are taught to those capable of acquiring these abilities.
In addition, training and hands-on experience is imparted in skills which can help the students to earn and potentially become independent in the future, by making saleable products
- Weaving woollen items like mufflers and stoles
- Candles
- Paper envelopes
- Sewing and stitching carry bags, aprons, masks etc.
- Spices and spiced salt
- Greeting cards
- Herbal colours
- Painted Diyas
- Batties (wicks) for diyas and aarti
Such work also helps teach them patience, ability to concentrate on the task at hand without distraction and also the concept of teamwork.
The learning gained in the school has helped many students to become independent. Some are assisting in tailoring, ironing or other shops, another is helping out with the family farm. One hearing impaired girl has set up a tailoring shop, after her marriage. Others have gone on to college, with one hearing impaired student finishing his post-graduation and joining the Railways.
